ON THE PASSING OF DR. CHESTER WOODROW GREGORY, SR.
The Department of History, Geography and Global Studies (HGGS) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Chester Woodrow Gregory, Sr.
Dr. Gregory was professor of History at Coppin State University from 1969 to 1994. During his tenure at Coppin, he was chairperson of the Division of Social Sciences from 1969 to 1974, and was for a period of time chairperson (1974 – 1977) and full time teacher and professor of History, Geography and Global Studies until his retirement in 1994. After his retirement, he served as professor of History from 1998 to 2003 at Morgan State University.
Dr. Gregory, a native of Kinston North Carolina, attended North Carolina College (now North Carolina Central) at Durham where he earned the A.B. and M.A degrees in history. He received his Ph.D. in 1969 from The Ohio State University in history. In addition to degrees in history, he also earned a M.Th. degree from St. Mary's University and Seminary, Baltimore, Maryland. He pursued additional study at the University of North Carolina, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Pennsylvania State University.
Early in his career, he developed an avid interest in gender studies, religious history, and black business history. Dr. Gregory's doctoral dissertation was on the role of women in defense work during World War II and was published as his first full length book: Women in Defense Work During World War II, An Analysis of the Labor problem and Women's Rights. He has numerous other publications that focus on women and has two full length books published on the history of the United Holy Church of America.
In 2007, the Department of History, Geography and Global Studies at Coppin State University established the Chester Woodrow Gregory, Sr. Colloquium. The Colloquium is an initiative that recognizes the research and scholarly commitment to academic excellence on behalf of Dr. Gregory as a distinguished historian. The Colloquium is also in recognition of Dr. Gregory's generosity for having established an endowment to promote scholarly historical studies and activities for department majors. Each year the Colloquium is held during the week of/and in conjunction with the University-Wide Excellence Celebration.
Dr. Gregory's organizational and professional memberships were numerous. He was elected to appear in Black Educators of America, named to Educators of the South, and served as a board member of the Black Business League of Baltimore. His memberships included but were not limited to: The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), Phi Alpha Theta, the Southern Historical Association, Maryland Historical Association, Maryland State Teachers Association, and the National Urban League.
Dr. Gregory is survived by his wife, Caren and four adult children: Chester W. Gregory, Jr., and Rosalyn K. (Kim) both of Baltimore, Maryland, and Debra Jackson of Goldsboro, North Carolina and Va'Shun Turner of Wilmington, DE. Dr. Gregory also has five grandchildren: Imani Gregory, Malik Gregory, Tyrone Jackson, Jakia and Jakai Turner.
