Jean Carol (Gooding) Newman was born on April 21, 1941 to the late Eva Winfield. She was raised mostly in Kinston and Lenoir County. Jean spent several years in early twenties in Washington DC. She departed this world for a heavenly walk with Jesus on November 18, 2017 at Vidant Medical Center surrounded by her loving family singing and telling stories. Jean graduated from Savannah High School class of 1959. She went on to attend Shaw University and graduated from Hawaiian School of Beauty Culture in Washington DC class of 1962.
Jean worked at Neuse Regional Library for twenty years and Lenoir County Public School for twelve years. She worked part time many of those years as a licensed beautician.
She is preceded in death by a brother who died at birth, her Mother Eva Winfield, Aunt Cora Mackey, Uncle Charles Newman, Uncle Jessie Newman, Uncle Theodore Roosevelt Newman and Aunt Ruth Goudeux, former husband Linwood Earl Gooding.
She leaves behind to mourn and cherish memories her daughters Carolyn Yvette Patrick (Rufus) , Chiquita Gooding-Register (Paterson), Kimberly Ann Hunter (Cleveland) and Victoria Lee Hunter (Kenny). Three grandchildren Ronald Hunter, Ken'ni Coats and Alaina Banks (affectionately called her BooBoo). grandson Donte' Ward (Ashley) great granddaughter Alena Ward grand dog Esto . Special cousins Joyce and Wilbur Johnson who stood with her as she transitioned home. Two of her daughters friends that became honorary daughters Bessie Burns and Delores Jones-Gregory. Mary Leinonen who was more than her physical therapist but became a dear part of the family. Stephanie DeGraffenreid (Fluffy) who was more than a caregiver but a motivator. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
She loved her family and enjoyed them most when they were all together being loud laughing and of course eating. A clean house beautiful flowers in her yard and her signature red hair were most important to her. Bingo with her children and her bingo buddies was one of her favorite activities. Jean enjoyed sitting watching the water and reading a book.
She was a member of hickory Grove church of Christ Disciples of Christ and was trustee and treasurer of the pastor's aide until her health began to decline.
