Reverend Dr. Mark Chapman, Sr., 98, was born to Rev.
Joseph and Lettuce Styles Chapman on March 1, 1911. He was the second oldest of nine children. He went home to be with the Lord on October 13, 2009 at his home in Kinston, North Carolina. Funeral services will be held on Saturday October 17, 2009 at 1 PM from the St. Peter Church of Christ Disciples of Christ with Dr. John T. Chapman officating. Burial will follow in the Pinelawn Memorial Park. Rev. Dr. Chapman received his early education in Lenoir County Public Schools and later attended Goldsboro-Raleigh Christian Institute. In September 1934, he was wed to his beloved wife, Beloney Baker Chapman. Thirteen children were born to this union during their 67 years of faithful love. He farmed in Lenoir and Jones Counties from 1945 until 1969 and retired from the Department of Transportation in 1975.
Rev. Dr. Mark Chapman, Sr. joined St. Peter Church of Christ prior to being called into the ministry in 1941. The township of Happersville, NC welcomed Dr. Chapman, the founder of St. Delight Church of Christ Disciples of Christ (DOC) in 1948. He helped build the original structure and pastured the church in its new Kinston location until 2000. Dr. Chapman served Shiloh Church of Christ DOC, Grifton, NC beginning in 1949 and he retired from Shiloh Church in 2004 at the age of 93 having pastured there for 56 years. Dr. Chapman served the Church of Christ Disciple of Christ as a member of the Board of Elders from 1978-1998 for the Goldsboro-Raleigh District Assembly.
His beloved wife of 67 years Beloney Chapman, his son Phillip Andrew who departed this life in 1975 and his daughter, Rachel Noami Simmons who departed this life in 2005, preceded him in death.
Dr. Chapman leaves treasured memories in the hearts and minds of his devoted children: six sons, Dr. Mark Chapman Jr. (Mildred) of Jacksonville, FL, Norris C. Chapman (Rosa) of Linden, NJ, Bishop James P. Chapman (Doris) of Kinston, Joseph N. Chapman (Denise) of Clarksville, TN, Dr. John J. Chapman (Esther) of Greensboro, and Isaac E. Chapman of Kinston. He leaves five daughters, Mary E. Wiggins (Booker T.) of Kinston, Sarah E. Barrett (Sam) of Hillside, NJ, New Jersey, Martha J. Cobb (Charles) of Kinston, Dorcas C. Green (Milton) of Kinston, and R. Deborah Williams (Curtis) of Portsmouth, VA; and 42 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. Dr. Chapman also leaves to cherish: One brother: Wilfred Chapman, Sr. (Vera) of Kinston, two sisters: Elizabeth Murdock of Baltimore, MD and Lula Hall of Kinston and host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Other relatives include: Isaac Murphy, Bianca Chapman, Jonathan Chapman, and Michael Chapman.
Viewing will be held on Friday October 16, 2009 3 PM to 8 PM at the funeral home. The family will recieve friends at 2021 Eastridge Circle, Kinston. Professional services entrusted to Swinson Funeral Service.
