Graveside Services will be on Thursday, July 16, 2020, at 11:00 AM at Brown Cemetery. A public visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 from 4:00 PM-6:00 PM from the Robert Swinson, Jr. Memorial Chapel.

Ms. Rachel Ward Mason, daughter of the late Elijah Ward and Ella Kornegay Ward, was born January 4, 1933, in Trenton, NC. She departed this life, sleeping peacefully at the home of her daughter.
She attended Jones County Public Schools. As a young girl, she moved to Lenoir County and found her second family with Mr. Tom Jones and Mrs. Reather Shine Jones, along with Queen Blount Conner and Ms. Vallie Moye Mason.
For many years, she worked on a farm with many jobs. Then she decided to move to the city limits of Kinston, NC. She landed employment at Caswell Center in Kinston, NC, where she retired. Later during her retirement, she became a Foster Grandmother at Caswell Center.
Rachel decided that she wanted to travel. She lived a few years in Richmond, VA, a few years in Paterson, NJ, and a few years in Queens, NY.
Rachel was married to the late James Willie Mason Jr. She joined St. Peter FWB Church, with the late Pastor Reverend Fountain, where she sand in the choir. She was a member of Victory and Dominion WOC Church in Snowhill, NC. She was ordained as a Mother of the Church and was an active member until her declining health.
Yate, as some of the children so affectionately called her, was a person that loved her children and family. She loved to go riding and to hang out with her children, especially her girls. She kept a tidy home and was stern. Rachel loved to fish.
Rachel was preceded in death by her three sisters, Ella Ward Williams, Mary Ward Hicks, Sudie Mae Ward, and her two sons, Anthony Ward, Clarence Jones.
She leaves the cherish her beloved memories: three daughters, Mable Ward Givens ( Lloyd) of Winterville, Linda Ward Best (James), Rosalind Ward Bern both of Kinston; three sons, Thurman Ward (Freda) of Greensboro, James Mason Jr. of Pollocksville, NC, Felton Mason (Lisa) of Snowhill, NC; three sisters, Carrie Ward Boney, Evangeline Ward Outlaw both of Kinston, Daisy Payton of Trenton, NC; two sisters-in-law, Frances Mason of Grifton, NC, Deloris Mason Atkinson (Jasper) of Baltimore, MD; brothers-in-law, Robert Mason (Loisteen) of Baltimore, MD, Ray Mason of Hookerton, NC; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and host of family and friends.
